The All of Us Research Program at Northwestern is a historic effort to accelerate research and improve health by gathering data from one million or more people living in the United States. All of Us Research Program participants will share information about their health, habits, and background and what it’s like where they live, and if they will want information about their DNA. They will share this information over a period of years. Researchers will look for patterns in the information. This could help researchers learn more about what affects people’s health.

The All of Us Research Program is part of the Precision Medicine Initiative. Precision medicine is healthcare that is based on you as an individual. It takes into account individual differences in biology, environment and lifestyle for each person. At the moment health care is often one-size-fits-all. But imagine a future where health care is tailored to you. All of Us wants to make that future possible by creating a resource that allows researchers to conduct thousands of studies on health and disease.

All of Us and Nutrition:

Nutrition plays an integral role in human development and in the prevention and treatment of disease. All of Us will be launching a new initiative, Nutrition for Precision Health. The aim of this effort will be to generate insights that may lead to more tailored nutritional recommendations based on individual differences. “Just like health care, nutrition can’t be one-size-fits-all,” said All of Us’s Chief Executive Officer Josh Denny, M.D. Look out for more details on this initiative when it officially launches.

Why Should I Join?

If you join, you will be contributing to research that may improve health for everyone. Research may help develop:

  • Better tests to see if people are sick or are at risk of getting sick.
  • Better mobile apps to encourage healthy habits.
  • Better medicine or information about how much of a medicine is right for each person as an individual.

Also, you will be able to see your All of Us information, which might be interesting to you. If you choose, you will be able to share your All of Us information with your doctor.

If you would like to start your journey with the All of Us Research Program, click here. You must create an account, give your consent, agree to share your electronic health records, review the consent to get DNA results, answer health surveys, and have your measurements taken (height, weight, blood pressure, etc.) and give blood and urine samples, if asked. The health information that you share with All of Us will go into a secure database. After completing these steps, you will receive a $25 gift card.
